In April 1955, the results of the trial were in. 1.3 million children around the world could now be protected against polio. It was estimated that this vaccine conferred protection to 60 to 90% of those vaccinated. The US government didn't want to administer the vaccine at public schools fearing it would seem too much like socialized medicine.
