1 MDB was set up in 2009 by Malaysia's new prime minister, Najib Razakh. It started out with a relatively small amount of money, just $1 billion. The fund had a mandate to invest in various different types of industries that would benefit the Malaysian people. But there was a character who seemed to be managing everything and have the complete trust of Razakh - but this man had no official role in the fund.
