Hoover fired all the female agents in 19 24, and banded the bureau from hiring them in the future. He denied the existence of organized crime even as gangsters ran wild. Hoover began to suspect any one the liberal end of the political spectrum including members of the emerging civil rights movement. And he targeted and surveiled various figures including martin luther king. American presidents were afraid of hoover, which is why he was allowed to remain in his office as the fbi director for forty eight years.
