"I was actually brilliant, but it took me 18 years to figure that out," Gary Pearson says. "My mom brought a sense of insignificance to my family that we were insignificant." His mother told him she'd rather he be 'a nobody like us' than her own son. He went on to graduate with distinction in electrical engineering from the University of Oregon.
