The Importance of Patralicality in the Early States

In South Korea, for instance, they're thinking of having mandatory service for women. In Israel, they already have that. So these kind of twin preoccupations then are the reason that the state becomes interested in the family and what happens in the family. And this in turn drives certain ideas about what it is to be a man and a woman then. A woman expert is expected to have more children and a man is expected to fight. But also, it's not that women can't fight, but if you were to die in fighting, that's a loss of population because you're not then able to have children. It becomes a very binary thing, which it wasn't before.
