The days of aircraft being able to fly overhead and strafe targets with cannon or rockets now seem to be over, at least on the modern battlefield. Russia operates a fleet of SU-25 frogfoot aircraft which are designed to do very much what they're designed to do. The SU-25 is armoured, it's got protection over the engines and fuel tanks, the pilot sits in this bulletproof bathtub. It also carries radar warning receivers and infrared flares and other means of distracting air defenses.
