Todd VanDerWerff: Nostalgia is a really important topic for psychological scientists, particularly since all as baby boomers are about to hit the wall. He says there appears to be an upper ceiling of about 120 and most people are not going to get much past 100 even like kids born today are more likely to make it to 100 than you and I are. "Just give me an extra year when, you know, when the end is coming or next or decade," he says.

For too long, the term insubordination has evoked negative feelings and mental images. But for ideas to evolve and societies to progress, it’s vital to cultivate rebels who are committed to challenging conventional wisdom and improving on it. Change never comes easily. And most would-be rebels lack the skills to overcome hostile audiences who cling desperately to the way things are.
