The Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Crisis in the World

In 1967, China tested a thermonuclear weapon well in advance of what the anticipated date had been. Just weeks later, the Six-Day War erupts with both the United States and the Soviet Union estimating that Israel is on the brink of acquiring its own small arsenal of tactical nuclear weapons. Most near nuclear states were US allies or partners. Why? Because they were the most advanced industrial powers in the world. In essence, nuclear proliferation posed a central challenge to the Soviet position in the global Cold War. This is something I think we've lost in our thinking about non-proliferation since the end of the Cold War.
