The Oracle Machine and the Turing Machine
Alan Turing first described what we now know today as the Turing machine, which he called the automatic machine. At the same time that he did this, he developed a different kind of idea for a machine which he call the Oracle machine. He said instead of just having an automated machine, you have something that is capable of communicating with the wider world and taking some kind of prompt from it. This is the kind of computation that was subsequently explored by Feels like cybernetics, various kinds of robotics. And thus those computers have contributed to building all these crucial ways of thinking about the world.
