The Relationship Between Hollywood and the Police
In 1915, the Supreme Court basically said that movies are not protected under the First Amendment. The police chief of the NYPD in 1908 shut down all of the movie theaters in New York City as like a show of force. In order to achieve this realism, Jack Webb had to create an intimate partnership with the LAPD. While not strictly nonfiction, this was the dominant form of true crime of the day.
