NTP stands for the network time protocol. It knows how to talk to some servers on the internet or some local servers that you probably then having talking to servers on theinternet, and it synchronizes your clocks with those servers. With just four timestamps, I can compute two important numbers, the offset and the delay. The offset is how far my clock is off from yours. If they're not the same, they introduce what's called error. That is an assumption that is made such that you can actually solve those equations to get the delay.
