A Critical of the American Scholar
The essay is a critique of, i guess, the american intellect. The mind of this country, taught to aim at low objects, eats itself up in the end. He's really calling for for man to plant himself indomitably on his instincts. So immediately there's this kind of tension of this radical individuality, but pointing towards something that is overarching and outside of yourself. It even confronts this directly.
