The grail theme, like a lot of the arthur mythos, gets taken up and sort of cannibalized by modernism in the twentieth century. T s eliot's the waste land can be seen as symbolic of psychological development among people who had survived world war one and the spanish flue. It draws on images of illness and infirmity but it also spiritualizes them.
