Mental models allow you to very efficiently make sense of stories. So for a mass audience, I would say the best definition of a mental model is a world in the sense of science fiction or fantasy. It's your sort of implicit understanding of what the world is. And if you are not familiar with the mental model, then the author must build the mental model himself.
