I like that you wrote that there's so many complicated layers to their relation. I think he thinks he loves her, but he is also, he does kind of capture that misogynist, nice guy who will idolize a woman and put her on the pedestal. After Amy comes back with Ben, it's kind of suggested that they are together now. It's not never explicit and they don't say it out loud. But the irony there I think is that even though over time their relation is one that's now divorced from a sexual relation or from sexual intercourse or any romantic involvement. That's when Amy does come to realize that he is actually someone she may have wanted to be with
