The vaginal speculum became much more popular in ganiological practice. The use of the speculum provoked insane debates, because we're still in the nineteenth century. And this idea that an upstanding, dignified male physician would glance into a vagina like very improper. A it would unli dream, everyone's dream.
A deeply embedded idea in our culture is the sexist notion that men are the “default” human, and women the unknowable “other". Nowhere is this more visible than in the history of medicine, with disastrous consequences for women’s’ health.
