In June 1948, Israel declared Hebrew as the national language of the Jewish state. It took an entire people over many centuries to ensure that this tremendous feat could be accomplished. Some credit Elie Benihuda with bringing Hebrew back to life; it's really much more complicated than that. Not everyone wanted it that way: If Herzl had it his way, Israelis would be speaking German today.
