The Origins of the Mali Empire

The west tends to portray the entirety of the so called islamic world as this backward land before time. But in fact, the social structures of the western sudan caste like status groups formed a compact obstacle to mass islamisation through to the twentieth century. The only way islam was able to actually penetrate the system, was to create its own status group within this system of status groups. Ate structure really seems to have to do with with the mali empire.
