The Kessler Syndrome

The International Space Station has to make an intentional maneuver away from an oncoming piece of debris at least once per year. People say that we're already undergoing the Kessler syndrome, but we haven't hit the tipping point yet. If you can imagine two satellites smashing into each other, creating tens of thousands of pieces of debris, it creates sort of this wall of debris. The more debris that's created, the more likely that another collision is going to happen or that more satellites will be destroyed.
