Freud says we need to think of the normal as itself a kind of disability. The neurotic has slipped over into being miserable out of this common unhappiness position that he associates with normalcy. Freud even said, I mean, didn't we say this in the analysis, terminal and interminable essay? "Normality is an ideal fiction"
