Faulkner shows the Sutton family, you know, who are completely backwoods. And they kind of just fall down the mountain over a period of months and end up in the tide water. They fell into it. The whole family returned to the coast from which the first Suttman had come tumbled head over heels back to tide water by sheer altitude, elevation and gravity. As if whatever slight hold the family had had on the mountain had broken. He said, he being Sutton, he said something about his mother dying about that time and how his pap said she was a fine, weary woman and that he would miss her.
