Antiochus's Experiment in the Middle East
Antiochus sought aggressively to hellenize and paganize the city of jerusalem, building a large fortress within it. Jason, the high priest, who had been deposed for menelaus, sought to regain control of the priesthood. And of menelaus and other leading tobiads fled to the syrians in egypt. Crushing rebellious factions in jerusalem would be just the way to get beyond the humiliation of his egyptian escapades. Turning back from egypt, he would take action against the holy cov t ant Antiochus the fourth.
