The Crusades of Barbarossa

The crusader armies crossed into Byzantine territory on the 1st of July 1189. Barbarossa had just enjoyed a relatively trouble-free crossing of Hungary. According to German accounts they were directed down the wrong road south, which hampered their progress. Horses were stolen, carts plundered and unarmed pilgrims murdered. It's possible that the Romans had encouraged the locals to attack the Latins in order to soften them up and make them more dependent on Byzantine assistance.
