The Tripartite Self - The Spirit
Man is described in his true inner essence as a sort of chimera of various beasts and monsters, these many animal heads that represent the passions of the drives. The spirit can either be made to cooperate with reason and be the very thing that enforces its principles or it can become rebellious itself - prideful and aggressive. And so Socrates says that in Justices quote, some kind of civil war between these same three elements when they interfere with each other and trespass on each other's functions.
