The History of Sacrifice

Gerard: The overcoming of human sacrifice is a difficult achievement for contemporary people to imagine. He says child sacrifice was practiced throughout the Middle East, and seems to have sometimes recurred among the Israelites after God stayed Abraham's hand from his son. But what the prophets tell people, Gerard says, is that sacrifice will no longer work.
