The Blessed Are the Poor in Spirit

The sermon on the mount is written in a kind of almost poetic form. It's not at all impossible to think of him as using this as his opening every time he shows up. In some ways, you could sum up the whole sermon on the Mount as 'Blessed are the poor in spirit' But it's actually an attitude of empathy that we're being asked to identify with. If you don't think you're poor in spirit, then identify with poor what it is to be poor in spirit right?
