For a long time, knots were only used by like, sailors and people who were doing practical things with them. It was actually physicists, not mathematicians, who first got interested in knots. The 18 hundreds thought that atoms might be not in kind of vortexes in the ether. But they were wrong. When i wave around a knot I'm harking back to nineteenth century physicists who thought this would explain all matter.
