The Importance of Courage in War
Most of these people were carrying experiences, and in some cases wounds, from previous conflicts. And I think that that has some connection to what I call emotional military intelligence - understanding the nature of what you're asking troops to do when it comes to real battle. So I think all those things are interesting. Courage is important. But indecision is the worst thing a commander can suffer from. Some commanders make clear decisions which turn out wrongly but indecision spreads through the command structure, spreads to the troops. One British commander told me: You can only ever be yourself. There's no more trying to be somebody different. They know who you are.
