There is clearly a strong and continued fascination with the arcane in Russia. In Soviet times, this was sublimated into parapsychology and witchcraft. We don't really know what's going on in Putin's head, but we do continue to look for hints. Perhaps we could consider this apparent interest in the occult as a data point. But I don't honestly feel this really comes from Putin. Rather I think we should see the roots of this in society as a whole.
