The official border crossing to Ukraine is in the town of Siget Umar Matsie, usually known as Siget. There's a cafe right by the bridge where small groups of men linger over coffee watching those who cross. Almost all are women, children or elderly people because Ukrainian men aged 18 to 60 can't leave the country without a special exemption. But if you don't want to fight in the war and you don’t want to brave the mountains, you have one other option: To swim across the river.
