Early Film Audiences Are Just as Bewildered by Moving Pictures
A modern audience, by virtue of increased media exposure, relative to kolishaf's day, has become accustomed to a more systematic and complex set of associational cues. So maybe the bar for a perceiving emotion in films as has gone up. There's some kind of projection going on, because maybe early film audiences were just so bewildered by moving pictures that they almost like hallucinated projections emotion. A lot of these kinds of reactions may have been audiences playing along. They're at the theatre having a good time, and they're playing along with what the suggested reaction was supposed to be.
