The Importance of the Armagest in Greek Astronomy
Claudius Ptolemaeus, also known as Ptolemy, was an astronomer. He wrote a book called the Armagest which collated all Greek astronomical knowledge of previous centuries into a single cohesive treatise. It would be generations before Copernicus started to question its assumptions, and it wasn't until after the fall of the Roman Empire that astronomy began to advance again. As well as being an astronomer, PtoleMY was a geographer, music theorist, and mathematician. We will return to his work on early optics in this article.
