Will Artificial Intelligence Become Conscious?

I think about this concept like what we have today with artificial intelligence, everything is so unbelievably far away from an actual conscious intelligence. This isn't going to happen by accident, right? Like Skynet's not going to wake up spontaneously without us intending to create something that is capable of being conscious,. But the question is, does that matter? And that's a separate question. It doesn't matter. Will it act enough like it is sentient that it might as well be in terms of its ultimate behavior?
