The Meaning of Epilepsy
Epilepsy was often referred to in ancient Greece and Rome as the sacred disease or the great disease. A person who had epilepsy was considered unclean and their condition contagious by touch or by sharing food or drink. Epilepsy was also thought to be from demonic possession or caused by the devil. Many people with epilepsy were forbidden to go to church, or if they were allowed, they could not take the Eucharist or touch anything in the church.
