The Thyroid Deficiency of Baby Mal
Amachi takes baby Mal to see Dr. Roon, and he diagnoses her with cretinism. It's a deficiency of the thyroid that's rare but when it does happen, the child fails to develop. If you don't recognize it almost at birth and treat it, the child will really be impaired in its development. She'll always be a child. That's what I have to tell you. He smiles at baby Mal. But what a happy child. A blessed child.
