Rolling Over

A roll is a thing that has been rolled up into a roll, like bread or carpet. The phrase dates back to the time when gambling was a common occurrence. It's derived from the idea that when something starts rolling, it will continue to do so if there is no outside force there to stop it. If you were to say you are on a roll, this is you are experiencing a prolonged spell of success or good luck. Repeatedly, you are doing really well, and don't want to stop for fear of losing your good luck streak.
