The Rise and Fall of Ragtime

Scott Joplin most likely went to Chicago for the world's Colombian exposition in 1893, possibly as part of the Texas medley quartet. Ragtime was still a very new style of music at that time; term would not be coined until three years later. He seems to have toured with the Texas Medley Quartet in 1893 and 1894 before he either moved to Sedalia or lived there permanently. His first piece of music was published in Syracuse, New York, suggesting he was there at the time.
