A so heis known as a critic of the capitalist mode of production, not principally as the theorist or architect of communism. He was overtly against a other so called utopian socialists of the nineteenth century who were essentially drawing blueprints. In that way, he was very much an enlightenment philosopher, but just a radical one. And this is important, because part of american cold war propaganda that we continue to live with to day, too easily conflate marks marxism.
