Is Language a Sliding Scale?

Some linguists and a lot of people in the public are thinking that having language or not is this almost binary choice. I don't actually have that big of a problem calling something a language pretty far out instead of fussiness. The way they need to package it sometimes becomes a bit weird. That doesn't mean it's worthless or uninteresting. What have the chimps done now?
