The Perfect Marriage of Subject Matter and Theme
Every character isn't just there to be a villain or to be this influence just because they have a reason. You feel like there's backstories for all these characters. They came from somewhere. And I think when these archetypes or these big characters don't work in films, because they're just plopped there to be an influence on the protagonist. The smartest thing James Cameron ever did was take that theme of like this is the classism of the time and of this particular world and embed that directly into his central characters - then force them to deal with it as part of their plot.
