The Purpose of Grieving

Grape sites were marked by tombs, columns or statues which were brightly painted and Greeks placed high value on immortality. They would carry the deceased to either their final resting place for burial or a funeral pyre for release to the Olympian gods. The social mobility of the Roman life allowed many people, even former slaves, to become wealthy with lavish funerary art depicting crowded funeral parades.
