Not just to catch up, but to really surpass everywhere else in the world. Cultural identity was being formed in real time through the movies. Even back in the twenties, whenever, for example, whenever the take was invented, some of the studio chiefs here in hollywood thought that the movie would essentially make english the thelg of the masses.
