The Battle of Wounded Knee
The Battle of Wounded Knee was the first and largest encounter of what became known as the Ghost Dance War. 90 Lakota were killed and four wounded, which is a 75% fatality rate among the Lakota. Black Elk wasn't there when hostilities broke out, but he heard the noise and came to investigate. In his book Black Elk Speaks, John Nihart recorded Black Elk as giving an account of what happened.
