The Oligarchs and the Athenians
Midaline had already surrendered just seven days earlier, and their hopes of putting Athens under intense pressure came to nothing. The oligarchs took the extraordinary step of giving out heavy arms to the lower classes who had been used previously only as light armed troops. This turned out to be a terrible mistake, because once they were armed, the starving people used their newfound advantage in their favor.
