Red shirting is when it's the idea that boys be held back a year or so before starting kindergarten, say. A 15-year-old girl has about the same prefrontal cortex as a 16-year old boy on average. So if you put them in classes where they're all the same age, the girls are almost inevitably on average going to be further ahead because of their developmental advantage.
