The Nubian sandstone aquifer system supplies Libya with drinking and irrigation water. The project has cost $25 billion, a bargain compared to desalination plants which are 10 times the price. It's estimated that one of the aquifers holds enough water to supply Libya for four thousand years. 40 years since it started, the project has suffered problems.
