Louis the fourt nth was typically a meticulous political operator. But his own succession, one of the most important things any monarch does, was not well planned out. When louis died in 17 15, france's borders were very close to the ones we know today. The royal government was deeply in debt. French expansion worried the rest of europe and taining louis was the focus of european geopolitics for decades. Philip duc d'orleans was named regent for louis the fifteenth. He spent lavishly on his vices and embarrassed the government with personal scandals.
