The First Cuban Missile Crisis
In 1962, the Soviet Union approached Cuba about placing nuclear missiles on their island. This was in part because at the time the United States had a severe strategic disadvantage when it came to nukes. Upon completion, the project would allow the Soviet missiles to strike almost anywhere in the 48 continental states. The Soviets pulled out all the stops in trying to keep the project secret and involved deliberate deception.
