Is This Legislation a Risky Move?
The bill has been going through for a long time, but many of the questions that are relevant to the bill are yet to be answered. We had a key court judgment only come about in December last month about whether having a GRC does actually impact your rights on the equality act. The UK government could have engaged in that process many times prior to getting to what's supposed to be viewed as a last result by trying to block a bill at Royal Ascent. And for Nicholas Sturgeon, I suppose the question is: Is this the right legislation to pick this kind of fight over?
