The Importance of Volition and Intentionality in the Pairing Problem
The pairing problem involves the idea of volition and intentionality. The term is used to describe a person acting for reasons in response to reasons. A substance view of causation holds that conscious agents like human beings or angels can initiate causal sequences without being one step in a causal chain. In other words, on this view, human beings are in some sense uncaused causes.
